Craig Breslow Reveals Role In Red Sox's Shocking Carlos Narvaez Benching originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The 2026 MLB season is only two weeks old, but the Boston Red Sox have already endured several mini-controversies this year.
Last week, Carlos Narvaez was shockingly benched before the Red Sox's series finale against the Houston Astros. Neither he nor Alex Cora explained why, preferring to keep the reason internal.
This week, Willson Contreras caused a stir with his threats against the Milwaukee Brewers. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and a fight did not ensue.
During his appearance on WEEI on Thursday, Craig Breslow explained his role in Narvaez's controversial benching.
"How confident are you, in the roster you built this offseason?" Can the Red Sox "turn it around quickly"? Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow joins!

"The role that I play there is to just kind of be a sounding board, to bounce ideas around," Breslow said. "Having spent a lot of time in a Major League clubhouse, I understand how important the relationship between the manager and the players is. I know that there are things that need to take place, that need to be handled within the doors of the clubhouse, and I am completely supportive of that."
After spending 12 seasons as a Major League pitcher and playing for great managers like Terry Francona, Breslow has experienced similar incidents up close and knows how sensitive they can be. It sounds like he trusts Cora's discretion and gives him the freedom to handle those kinds of situations as he sees fit.
Fortunately, the benching already seems to have blown over. Narvaez has played five of Boston's last six games, resuming his role as the team's starting catcher. The three-day layoff may have disrupted his timing at the plate, however, as he's just 2-for-17 since the benching.
