The Boston Red Sox have had several revolving doors on their roster in recent years, including first base and second base. Triston Casas was supposed to be the long-term answer at first base, but injuries have largely prevented that from happening.
Fortunately, the Red Sox rectified their issues at first base last offseason by trading for Willson Contreras, sending Hunter Dobbins and two prospects to the St. Louis Cardinals in return.
That move has already proven to be a slam dunk for Boston based on the massive early returns. Contreras has been the team's best hitter this year, leading the club in home runs, RBI and all three triple slash stats.
The three-time AllStar is also having the best season by a Red Sox first baseman in years. His 2.0 fWAR is already the most by a Boston first baseman since Hanley Ramirez in 2016, and he's on pace for the team's best season by a first baseman since Kevin Youkilis.
Contreras does more than just hit, too. He's also a great defensive first baseman and clubhouse leader, immediately establishing himself as a respected veteran voice on the Red Sox's young roster.
Fortunately for Boston, the 34-year-old slugger still has two years of team control remaining, making him even more valuable.
The Red Sox have made some questionable trades over the last few years, but this one has been a clear win for them.
