It looked like there would be a three-way competition at backup quarterback this summer in Dallas, after the Cowboys agreed to terms Tuesday night with Sam Howell. The four-year passer out of North Carolina was added, ostensibly, to battle with seven-year veteran Will Grier as well as Joe Milton III behind starter Dak Prescott.
But Howell has moved up one rung on the ladder simply by signing his contract, apparently. Dallas has released Grier, it was announced by Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys team website. Grier, 30, had two stints with the organization.
Originally a third-round draft pick by the Panthers in 2019, Grier started two games for Carolina as a rookie but has not seen the field in a regular-season contest since then. After two seasons in Charlotte, Grier was brought aboard in Dallas to replace Ben DiNucci as the third-stringer for the 2021 season. Following a 300-yard passing performance in the 2023 preseason finale that served as an audition, Grier was waived by the Cowboys and signed with Cincinnati prior to the season.
Brief tours with the Patriots and Chargers came next, followed by a practice squad stay with the Eagles for the first half of the 2024 campaign. Grier was brought back to Dallas in November of that season; he had signed a futures contract just last month.
The move leaves Howell and Milton to duel for the backup QB spot this summer at training camp.
