For years, length and height were the golden traits for cornerbacks ‘round these parts. The Dallas Cowboys were a single-high-safety team and with that came a steady diet of Cover 1 and Cover 3 defenses. Under Kris Richard and the various defensive minds that came after him, the Cowboys modeled the famed, “Legion of Boom” in Seattle, meaning their back three players lined up pretty transparently.

Such defenses valued long and lean cornerbacks to control the boundary and keep windows tight. They didn’t always need to carry routes inside, since the boundary and deep zone often took precedent. Small cornerbacks were begrudgingly accepted but relegated to slot duty in nickel personnel. When the occasional average build cornerback shined, the Cowboys always seemed to be looking for bigger, longer, better replacements (see Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis). It was length the Cowboys desired, and up until very recently, it was length that drove Dallas into some fairly regrettable decisions.

Times are-a-changing in the NFL and stagnant Cover-3 looks are becoming a thing of the past. Versatility and deception are the new king and first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker is the one bringing it to Dallas.

Parker needs his cornerback to play off, zone and press coverages. He needs his outside cornerbacks to handle inside-breaking routes more frequently than the previous regimes and can’t afford to have one-dimensional sideline specialists on the field. It means players who would have previously been cherished for their height and length are the ones under special scrutiny. The angularly gifted must prove they have the hips, fluidity and center of gravity required to fulfill all aspects of the job in 2026.

#DallasCowboys CB Shavon Revel: "We've got a new coaching staff, they're very detailed and very technical... each day is intentional to get better. That's what I feel like I've been doing. Of course there's some things I need to work on. My knee is 100%, so now it's time to focus… pic.twitter.com/KLB1Rl6vYE

Shavon Revel

When Shavon Revel fell into Dallas’ laps in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, it felt like a steal. A prospect who was considered by some to be the best pure man cornerback in the class fell because of a knee injury that robbed him of his 2025 season.

Revel, 6-foot-2, 202 pounds, brought arms that measured nearly 32-inches and a wingspan that hit almost 80-inches. Based on scouting reports by Dane Brugler he’s a player who used the sideline to his advantage in college. He’s lean and long-legged, meaning he can get high with his gravity and get grabby on cuts as a result.

New Cowboys CB Devin Moore did not have a single penalty over the last two seasons.

Devin Moore

At pick No. 114 in the 2026 NFL draft, the Cowboys double-downed on long when they drafted Devin Moore out of Florida. Like Revel, he was a player whose film warranted a better draft spot, but also like Revel he had injury concerns that made teams nervous.

The similarities don’t end there; Moore stands over 6-foot-3 with nearly 32-inch arms and a wingspan that’s close to 77 inches. Unlike Revel, Moore’s film shows strong ability to carry routes on breaks inside. He has solid stickiness for a man of his height and can play a variety of roles in a variety of coverages.

What to watch for

Being able to sink their hips and follow receivers on routes will be the key to both of their success. The Cowboys will still play plenty of Cover 1 and Cover 3 in 2026 so their specialties will be useful regardless, but being skilled enough for a variety of roles opens far more opportunities.

What was once a blessing, or even requirement, now stands to hinder. The Cowboys top prospects at cornerback will be challenged to overcome their gravity and expand their game in 2026.
