July's start also marks 74 days before the New Orleans Saints officially begin their 2026 regular season. The Saints will kick off their year on the road against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Wearing No. 74 as the team heads towards training camp is Xavier Truss, a second-year offensive lineman.
Truss was acquired by the Saints midway through last season. He'll battle for a backup tackle spot in training camp. We take a closer look at Truss as our Saints Player of the Day features continue.
A 1st Team All-State selection at Bishop Hendricksen High School in Rhode Island, Truss choose the Georgia Bulldogs as his collegiate destination. He'd redshirt in 2019 and saw extensive action as a reserve in 2020. In 2021, Truss was still a backup but played both tackle and guard. He was the starting left guard by 2022 on a Georgia line that bulldozed their way to the national championship. Truss held on to the starting role through the next two campaigns, earning 2023 2nd Team All-SEC honors.
After going undrafted in 2025, Truss was signed by the Denver Broncos. Despite playing well in the preseason, he was among Denver's final roster cuts. The Saints picked him up for their practice squad less than 48 hours after his release. Truss remained on the practice squad for all but one of the first ten games last season. However, he was promoted to the active roster for each of the last six contests. Truss didn't see any offensive action, but did play a total of 30 snaps with the special teams units.
New Orleans has one of the league's top young tackle tandems in Banks and Fuaga. Up for grabs is up to two spots behind them. The fact that Xavier Truss can also play guard could give him an edge in the competition. Look for him to work as both a tackle and guard throughout training camp and preseason.
