Sunday marks 70 days before the New Orleans Saints officially begin their 2026 regular season. The Saints will be on the road to start the year, traveling north to take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Rookie offensive lineman Alan Herron wears No. 70 for the team as they head towards training camp in a few weeks.
An undrafted rookie, Herron will be in the mix for the competition at backup tackle behind starters Kelvin Banks and Taliese Fuaga. As our countdown to kickoff series continues, we have a closer look at Herron as our Saints Player of the Day.
Born in Jamaica, Herron did not begin playing football until his senior year of high school after moving to America. From there, he played two years collegiately at Shorter University before starting the last two seasons at right tackle for Maryland. While there's room for technical improvements, Herron has nice fundamentals and the frame/footwork combination for the position in the NFL.
Herron was one of 30 official pre-draft visits with the Saints, and wound up receiving a $25,000 signing bonus and $272,500 in guaranteed money. New Orleans has two top-tier tackles in Banks and Fuaga. The spots behind them are up for grabs. Returning swing tackle Asim Richards is probably the early favorite with Xavier Truss and Barry Wesley close behind. Herron and fellow undrafted rookie Alex Wollschlaeger will have to impress early in camp to be in the mix.
Alan Herron got the second-highest guarantees in the Saints' undrafted rookie class. This doesn't mean that a roster spot is secured, but New Orleans clearly saw something that interested them. Herron has a tough climb ahead of him in training camp, but flashed the ability in college to be a surprise roster pick.
