The countdown to Longhorns football continues with just 88 days between us and the season teeing off. Today is another “Hot Take Tuesday” and I thought I’d turn to the intriguing freshman playmaker, Jermaine Bishop Jr. It’s been made clear Steve Sarkisian sees Bishop as more than just a WR, which brings me to my prediction: Jermaine Bishop Jr. won’t just rack up receiving TDs this year. He’ll add a TD in another facet of the game.

During Bishop’s high school career, he was one of, if not the most dynamic playmaker in Texas High School Football. In his senior season, he notched 20 receiving TDs, 8 rushing TDs, 3 passing TDs and a pick-six on defense. He also had two kick return TDs throughout his high school career. This is not a normal freshman. This is a special player that needs the ball in his hands consistently.

Historically, Steve Sarkisian has leaned on three main WRs. I believe Coleman/Wingo/Mosley represent that trio this year, but someone like Bishop can’t be kept off the field. He will push Sarkisian to have four WRs on the field more, line him up in the backfield or really anything to make sure he’s getting snaps. Given the high school career and the offseason hype, it’s not far-fetched to believe Bishop will find the field early and often, even with the elite players in front of him.

#Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian confirms that Star freshman Jermaine Bishop is going to be allowed to play some defensive back in the summer after playing WR exclusively in the spring.

"He's that gifted, he's physically gifted and he's got the mind to withstand it."

Now, how does Bishop come by those TDs? Well, a receiving TD feels like a given. He will at least reel in one TD in the receiving game, meaning he’ll need to add one in a different way. He’ll get carries on end arounds, jet sweeps, etc. early in the season. On top of that, he and Raleek Brown could very well be the kick return duo throughout this season, with Niblett handling the punt return game.

Point being, this is the best offensive playmaker Steve Sarkisian has signed at Texas. The versatility, both on offense and defense, is something Longhorn fans haven’t seen in this era and I believe it’ll be undeniable this season. I won’t promise a Jeremiah Smith or Malachi Toney-level freshman season, but I believe Bishop will do special things this season including scoring via a handoff, kick return or maybe even a pick-six this season.

That’s a take that I believe some will view as hot but I feel fairly confident will come to fruition. That’s a special player that I believe will do special things in a Longhorns uniform. Tomorrow, we’ll cover another special player, Ryan Wingo, and why his selflessness this offseason could be what delivers a National Championship to Austin.
