Could the Vikings be dealing with a tough decision at QB in 2027?

The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray this offseason with the expectation that, at worst, the floor of the quarterback room is raised. Ideally, Murray's addition pushes J.J. McCarthy to improve, and whoever is at QB1 come the regular season helps the Vikings return to the playoffs.

Of course, we're one year removed from Minnesota making a catastrophic mistake at quarterback, which put them in this dilemma. But if the Vikings don't get the results they desire in 2026, they could be in line to add a quality quarterback in next year's talented draft class.

Carter Bahns of CBS Sports listed Minnesota as one of seven teams that are most likely to need a quarterback in next year's draft. There will likely be several QBs taken in Round 1, and if the Vikings' passing game struggles yet again, they could look for a signal-caller early on.

Much like the Falcons, Minnesota finds itself choosing between an oft-injured and unproven youngster and a perennial middle-of-the-road veteran seeking one final chance as a starter. The more team-friendly outcome is for McCarthy to figure things out, but the more likely scenario is that Murray delivers a solid campaign and forces the Vikings to decide between re-signing him or finding a rookie replacement.

If Murray can get Minnesota to the playoffs and win a game or two, the decision to extend him should be easy. However, a mediocre season or a one-and-done playoff run could put the Vikings in a situation similar to last year, when they allowed Sam Darnold to leave via free agency.

Minnesota is hoping to avoid that awkward scenario again. If Murray does what he was brought in to do, the Vikings won't have to stress about it.
