Yeah but its pretty ridiculous that articles written act like all of these other deals were even on the table. I could say we could trade marion for Lebron for a better deal that doesn't mean that was even an option. They just adding numbers and saying oh well you could have done this, but in reality the other team has to offer those deals.

If those deals were on the table, it would have been better to keep Marion. None of those would change the team significantly or make it better. It's not like we HAD to move Marion. We made the trade because we HAD to address the need for size and add the ability to add a dimension for when the game slows down in the playoffs.

So often, writers do not keep the big picture in mind when considering trades. The team that wins in a trade is the team that is better aftwards than it was before.

Unless you are rebuilding of course

That's a great point too. The intentions of the trade have to be factored in. If you trade away an All-Star for cap space and future 1st round picks and that is what you needed at the time then you probably got fair value.

Even if those picks turned out to by disasters and you couldn't get the free agent that you targeted. Can you really say you didn't get fair value for that guy?

The thing I do like about this trade is that the goal is to position themselves in the playoffs now, and position them for the future a couple of years from now. If Shaq doesn't at least help us get to the finals, it will be a huge disappointment, but it's not the kind of disappointment a firesale or years of cap hell brings.
