JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — ETSU men’s basketball added size and high-level experience to its roster with the addition of former Wake Forest forward Marqus Marion.
The 6-foot-9 Denmark native appeared in 41 games for the Demon Deacons, including seven ACC contests last season. Marion transferred to ETSU after reuniting with head coach Brooks Savage, who helped recruit him to Wake Forest.
“When I got recruited by Wake Forest, Savage was on my visit there because he was on the coaching staff,” Marion said. “So when he came to ETSU, it was kind of like we already had that connection. It was a pretty easy choice for me with the vision they have for me.”
After averaging career highs of 1.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 20 games last season, Marion said he’s eager to make the most of a bigger opportunity.
“I’ve been out for so long, I’m just eager to get in here,” Marion said. “It’s been nice that we play so much, just getting up and down, getting back in shape, learning my teammates, learning our offense and defense.”
Savage believes Marion’s experience against ACC competition should help ease his transition into a larger role with the Buccaneers.
“I think coming from that level is an advantage,” Savage said. “He’s played in real games and meaningful minutes and has been coached. It’s good to have experienced players that have come from good programs.”
