Are the Washington Commanders done adding to their backfield? The Commanders heavily scouted running backs ahead of the 2025 NFL draft and spent a seventh-round pick on Jacory Croskey-Merritt of Arizona.
What if Washington wanted more? What if the Commanders pursued one of the NFL's elite running backs over the past seven years? Nick Chubb is a free agent. At 29 years old, Chubb is coming off back-to-back seasons where he played a combined 10 games. In 2023, Chubb suffered a torn MCL and a damaged ACL. After beginning the 2024 season on the physically unable to perform list, Chubb returned, played in eight games and was lost again for the year with a broken foot.
Chubb is healthy now and wants to play. The Browns have moved on, using two draft picks on running backs, including an early second-rounder on Quinshon Judkins. Someone will sign Chubb, likely either before training camp or after a team has lost one of their backs due to injury.
Back to the Commanders. Could they be a legit option? Washington wants to run the ball. Last season, the Commanders were one of the NFL's top rushing teams, but that was mostly due to quarterback Jayden Daniels' phenomenal abilities. As the season progressed, Washington's running backs were less effective. Some of that was due to the back, and part of it was due to the offensive line.
The Commanders have improved the offensive line, trading for Laremy Tunsil and drafting Josh Conerly Jr. in the first round. Last year's top four backs all return, and the Commanders also have Croskey-Merritt.
Rusty Mansell runs the On3 website DawgsHQ, covering the Georgia Bulldogs, and he predicted that either the Commanders or the Chicago Bears make sense for Chubb.
Now, Mansell has no idea if the Commanders are interested in Chubb. It would make sense if they were, though. Why not? He looks healthy. He's motivated, and he would not need to carry the entire load for Washington. Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler are currently the Commanders' 1a and 1b in the backfield. Croskey-Merritt could spend his rookie season on the practice squad if Washington signed Chubb, leaving Jeremy McNichols and/or Chris Rodriguez on the outside looking in.
With the Commanders doing everything they can to maximize Daniels' rookie contract window, it would make sense to add a veteran like Chubb. General manager Adam Peters is always looking for motivated veterans on one-year deals.
Could Chubb be next?

My prediction is Bears or
Commanders and someone is about to get an elite back again. pic.twitter.com/JOelQZEoSd
