The Washington Commanders were always going to draft a running back in the 2025 NFL draft. Washington was linked to backs expected to go at different points in this weekend's draft, including Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson, who went to the New England Patriots in the second round.
With only five picks, Washington did not address the running back until the seventh round, when it selected Arizona's Jacory Croskey-Merritt with the No. 245 pick. Croskey-Merritt was a player the Commanders loved throughout the pre-draft process, even hosting him on a visit.
The 5-foot-10, 206-pound Croskey-Merritt began his career at Alabama State before spending one season at New Mexico and one at Arizona. During his final season with the Wildcats, Croskey-Merritt only played in one game due to an eligibility issue from his time at Alabama State, carrying the ball 13 times for 106 yards and a touchdown.
