Bobby Wagner is undoubtedly one of the best linebackers of all time. Ray Lewis, London Fletcher and Wagner are the only three players in NFL history with 2,000 or more career tackles.

However, Wagner will soon turn 36, so it's safe to say his best playing days are behind him. The linebacker spent the last two seasons with the Washington Commanders, but he remains unsigned as we head into April. The Commanders also spent big in free agency on linebacker Leo Chenal, perhaps signaling that Wagner won't be back in 2026.

If Wagner doesn't re-sign with Washington, though, he may not even have to leave the division to find his next team. Head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer, recently sat down with Kay Adams and expressed how much he likes Wagner as a player.

"You're looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world," Schottenheimer declared. "I love that guy and he's still playing at a high level, so we'll see how everything works out."

What does Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer think about FA linebacker Bobby Wagner?

Schottenheimer also noted that he and Wagner were both in Seattle from 2018 to 2020. The coach mentioned that he loved the way Wagner talked trash "in a good way" at practice and praised his attitude and work ethic.

Wagner to the Cowboys certainly makes sense, even without factoring in the Schottenheimer connection. The Cowboys received atrocious play from their inside linebacker last season, and while Wagner is no longer elite, he could be a perfectly fine stopgap.

In 2025, the future Hall of Famer played in all 17 games and collected 162 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions. Despite his age and speed regression, Pro Football Focus still gave Wagner a very respectable 78.6 grade for his 2025 season.

Wagner has signaled that he has no intentions of retiring this offseason, so it will be interesting to see where he lands.
