Will Carolina Panthers shock NFL in 2026?
The Carolina Panthers have officially begun training camp, reporting on Thursday as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 season. Fresh off a NFC South title in 2025, the Panthers are hoping to build on that moving forward.
While Carolina finished 8-9 overall and won the division via a tiebreaker, they still reached the playoffs and were in the game against the Los Angeles Rams. But as we go into this season, many are not giving the Panthers a chance.
Instead, they believe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Atlanta Falcons could be a team that wins the division. However, one writer from The Athletic believes that the Panthers could be an underrated team this year.
Mike Jones of The Athletic wrote about the NFL's most underrated teams going into this season. Among those teams, he listed the Carolina Panthers.
Here is what Jones had to say about the Panthers and why he believes they are underrated:
A tiebreaker over the Buccaneers and Falcons paved the way for the Panthers’ first playoff appearance in eight years. Bryce Young’s third season saw him put up career numbers in passing yards (3,011) and touchdowns (23). The defense went from dead last to middle of the pack... Carolina coach Dave Canales and his group just might make some more strides in his third season.
The bottom line for the Panthers is that this season could come down to how Bryce Young plays overall. While he did have a better season a year ago, he does need to be more consistent moving forward. If he can do that, it will go a long way for the success of the Panthers. A good run game will also help out big time.
Something else to keep an eye on is Carolina's defense. They are in a division where outside of Baker Mayfield, the other quarterback situations are unstable. The Panthers went out and made some moves to improve the defense overall. Carolina's defense could win them a few games and at minimum keep them in a lot more games than we expect.
Let's see if the prediction of the Panthers being underrated holds up which would mean great news moving forward.
