SUNY New Paltz basketball earned four all-star nods - two for NCAA tourney-bound women, two for men - in its final season of competition in the SUNY Athletic Conference.
Rondout Valley High School graduate Aaron Coston was a first-team choice for the men for the third year in a row, closing out a strong career for SUNY Cortland. He has started all 27 games, leading the Red Dragons with 14.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, to go with a team-high 29 blocks. He had 19 games scoring double figures, eight of which included double-digit rebounds. He was the SUNYAC tourney MVP. In 101 career games, he has 1,285 points and 608 rebounds.
Grad student Brianna Fitzgerald of New Paltz, from Dix Hills, was named the women's player of the year, defensive player of the year and was a first-team choice (for the fourth time, one of only six SUNYAC players to do so). She was joined by teammate and senior forward Karly Wittenbauer, of Edison, N.J., on the second team..
Fitzgerald previously won the player of the year in 2022-23 and 2023-24, making her the second SUNYAC top player to win at least three years in a row - Arlene Eagan of Buffalo State won from 1987-91. Fitzgerald missed the 2024-25 season with a knee injury.
Fitzgerald has started all 26 games, leading the Hawks in scoring (17.6 points per game), field goals made, attempted and by percentage (161-for-349, 46.1 percent), assists per game (3.7), rebounds per game (8.7) and minutes per game (31.5).
Wittenbauer has started in 19 of 25 games, averaging 12.6 points, posting 147 rebounds, 59 steals, 58 assists and 19 blocks. She leads the Hawks with a 81.4 percent free throw success rate, posting the winning point in a one-point semifinal win.
In men's basketball, New Paltz senior LaMar Matthews, of Buffalo, and sophomore Isaiah Rivera, of the Bronx, were second-team selections as wings.
Matthews led the team in scoring (16.2 points per game) and field-goal percentage (.526), ranked second with 163 rebounds and fourth in steals (26). He topped 20 points on 10 occasions and had four double-double stat lines.
Rivera started 25 times, led the team in rebounding (7.1 per game), ranking second in minutes (750 in all), third in steals (40), shooting 52.8 percent from the floor, posting 45 assists and ranking second in scoring (380 points).
In the NCAA Div. III tourney openers on Friday, the Cortland men face Franklin and Marshall, while the New Paltz women take on Immaculata.
