The news is out. Following days of speculation after a 19-point, second-half collapse against VCU in its NCAA Tournament opener, UNC fired Hubert Davis as its head men's basketball coach.
North Carolina now has another tough decision ahead: finding its next head coach. The Tar Heels are being linked to some of the sport's top names, such as Florida Gators boss Todd Golden, but a decision likely won't be made until April.
If UNC wants to hire one of those top names, it'll come at a steep cost. Golden's buyout of $16 million leads the list of five candidates, which also includes Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd ($11 million), Alabama's Nate Oats ($10 million), Michigan's Dusty May ($7.5 million) and Iowa State's T.J. Otzelberger ($4 million).
The latter four coaches are still playing in the NCAA Tournament. Arizona will face Arkansas in the Sweet 16, Alabama and Michigan will battle for a spot in the Elite 8, while Iowa State prepares to face Tennessee.
Sure, each of the buyouts listed above are sizable, but North Carolina needs to start competing for National Championships again. Golden won the 2025 title with Florida, Lloyd, Oats and May have deep NCAA Tournament runs, while Otzelberger has Iowa State in its third Sweet 16 since 2022.
Roy Williams hand-picked Davis, his longtime assistant, to take over ahead of North Carolina's 2021-22 campaign. With a surprise run to the National Championship game, Davis quickly looked like the answer.
The Tar Heels missed the 2023 NCAA Tournament, a caution sign after being ranked Preseason Number One, but responded to earn a top seed in 2024. UNC barely snuck into the 2025 NCAA Tournament, then choked away a big lead last week.
