Former players can certainly see things others can not.

Logan Paulsen, a former NFL tight end who played from 2010 through 2014 with Washington, often provides acute analysis. Recognizing this, Grant Paulsen (no relation) of 106.7 The Fan asked Logan Paulsen (LP) on Thursday's edition of "Grant & Danny."

"Can you tell the difference watching now compared to a year ago? Is that something you can notice in real time? I don't remember that being a storyline last year, that there was a lack of excitement."

LP replied, "I remember talking with you or someone on the beat last year, and there was this lackluster feeling, especially around training camp time. I chalked it up to, oh, you know, Terry's (McLaurin) working on his contract, Noah Brown's not there (injury), they don't have their starting left guard in the lineup (Brandon Coleman injury), they're kind of nursing some guys back from injury on defense."

After today's practice, I asked Commanders safety Will Harris on the defensive identity they want to create this season.

Will said, "we are trying to be that physical group. That feared group. That dog group." pic.twitter.com/wA3tzkoWLu

He is right, all of that was going on, and as a result, there was no sense of urgency. For instance, Terry McLaurin and his agent were acting like he was Jerry Rice and publicly bad-mouthing the Commanders. Local DC radio shows had hosts all predicting the Commanders would have a very successful 2025. One host I vividly recall boldly predicted the Commanders would win the NFC and go to the Super Bowl.

LP then pointed to Thursday's workout in the red zone, where there was celebrating and back-and-forth talking between the offense and defense; "the pulses were up."

Paulsen, who played for Quinn in Atlanta, offered the following: "That's something that I always appreciated about Dan. It should be fun to come to work. We should be getting productive, energetic exchanges between the offense and defense. I felt like today, whether that was scripted or whether that happened organically, I thought that was something that speaks to your point, Grant.

It's not like the guys were going super hard, but you could tell the guys were having fun. The energy was up, it was very competitive."

That's good to hear. Iron sharpens iron; that is, an iron tool sharpens another iron tool. So too in life. Coaches should be sharpening fellow coaches, players sharpening fellow players, and friends sharpening true friends.
