Former Washington tight end Logan Paulsen was asked a very direct question this week.
The 10-year NFL veteran was a guest on the Grant & Danny Show on 106.7 The Fan after the Commanders completed minicamp this week. Rouhier didn't beat around the bush: "Do you feel, and again, this is minicamp, it is June, do you get the sense there might be a paradigm shift to some degree from Quinn and his staff in terms of leading up to the season, whether going a little bit harder more often?"
Interpretation: Rouhier didn't like the lack of urgency in last year's training camp, with the coaches perhaps overreactive and wanting to limit the risk of injury. The Commanders, thus, in their first two games last year, immediately looked a step slower, were completely outplayed by the Packers, and the offense was not sharp vs. the Giants in the opener.
Paulsen responded, "Well, you know, he talked earlier this week in his press conference about how this is going to be a really competitive camp. I think that is speaking to the depth, but I also think it's speaking to a certain mindset/approach. Just watching that second group or the group that's going at kind of a full tilt out there. It's a competitive group of guys out there. It's pretty physical. They're not in full shoulder pads, but they're pushing the envelope there. It does feel like, if we are comparing it to last year, there's a little bit more pop, a little bit more energy, and a little bit more excitement on the team."
Paulsen wrapped up his statement with a summary: "While there is this new age thinking of protecting the players, finding ways to modify practice, to mitigate injury, I also feel this is a mix of some pretty competitive practice reps and letting guys get better."
The Commanders went 12-5 in 2024 but overlooked some of the quarterbacks they defeated. Wait, the Commanders actually forgot how many games during the 2024 season they actually won in the last minute?
