All it can take, sometimes, is one draft to establish a championship window for a franchise.
The Washington Commanders understand that well. Their championship window has begun seemingly overnight, thanks to the 2024 draft class.
From second overall pick Jayden Daniels to a collection of mid-round starters, the Commanders' 2024 draft class is one of the best the team has had in its history.
Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox doesn't just want to keep the scope of their draft to Washington's history, though. In his latest article, he listed last year's rather amazing Commanders draft class as the third-best rookie crop of the past five years.
"While Daniels was clearly the star of Washington's 2024 class, he wasn't the only key contributor as a rookie. Second-round cornerback Mike Sainristil started 16 games, while third-round offensive tackle Brandon Coleman started 12," Knox wrote. "Second-round defensive lineman Jer’zhan Newton dealt with a foot injury early in the year, but he ended up starting 11 games as a rookie.
"The Commanders also got contributions from fourth-round wide receiver Luke McCaffrey. While McCaffrey didn't have a huge offensive role (18 catches, 168 yards, zero touchdowns), he averaged 29.9 yards on kickoff returns."
The 2024 class for Washington opened up a title window that few thought the franchise would see after almost 30 years of mediocre play marked by front office scandals. It is a testament to how quickly the organization has been able to rebuild its aura since Josh Harris bought the team two years ago.
There's still work to be done. However, the work that has started in the 2024 class will keep Washington in title contention for years to come.
