With rookies already reported to training camp on Friday and veterans set to report on Tuesday, July 28 ahead of first practice set for the following day, the Washington Commanders have placed three players on the active/physically unable to perform list on Saturday morning.
That includes cornerback Trey Amos, who was sidelined for the final eight games of the 2025 season after suffering a broken fibula. The second round pick from last year's draft was a key part of the cornerback room where he is expected to once again step into an impact role, but how soon Amos would be able to make that recovery was a question mark. Amos has offered encouraging updates about his recovery during the offseason despite not participating in either OTAs or minicamp last month. The addition of veteran Rasul Douglas alleviates some strain on Amos being ready immediately, but the question remains just when will last year's standout in the room be ready to make his return to field.
Dorance Armstrong is set to play on the third year of his three year deal worth $45 million annually, a contract that also reunited the veteran with his defensive coordinator during their time together with the Dallas Cowboys. Armstrong notched 5.5 sacks in five starts and seven appearances in 2025 before suffering a season-ending knee injury that led him to be placed on injured reserve. Armstrong will have an opportunity to step back into the rotation that saw attention in both free agency and the draft, yet the 29 year old will now have to ease his way back in following Saturday's unsurprising decision.
Deatrich Wise Jr. was the third and final player to be placed on the PUP list to begin training camp. Wise arrived in Washington last offseason on a one year deal, but the production never materialized after he suffered a season-ending quad injury in the week two road loss against the Green Bay Packers that led him to be placed on injured reserve. Wise was among the other players who re-signed with the Commanders on a new one year deal this offseason to give him another crack at living up to his profile, but similar to Armstrong, he'll now look to prove it once healthy in an upgraded room.
While Amos, Armstrong and Wise are sidelined to begin camp, the Commanders will have veteran Tim Settle with no reservations after entering training camp with no injury designation. The team did announce that Fred Davis II, an undrafted free agent cornerback out of Northwestern, has also been placed on the active/non-football illness list ahead of training camp.
