The Washington Commanders made several changes to their coaching staff and roster during the offseason. After winning just five games in 2025, Adam Peters knew changes had to be made. Injuries happen every year, and while replacing Jayden Daniels is no easy feat, it seemed like "next man up" was a choice instead of a mindset across every position that suffered injuries.
To be fair, Marcus Mariota was holding his own until he also got hurt.
Defensively, a lot of changes happened. Peters saw the gaps he needed to fill, and he used the opportunity to get younger and faster players to complement the Commanders' dynamic offense. With most of their pieces in place, there is always room for improvement. ESPN analyst Matt Bowen suggests that the Commanders would be a good landing spot for cornerback Trevon Diggs.
Diggs' injury history is concerning, especially given that's what the Commanders are trying to avoid in 2026. Diggs tore his ACL in 2023 and missed significant time that season. In 2024, he missed time with a groin injury and then was later placed on injured reserve for surgical repair to the same knee that had the ACL tear, although this was a different injury. In 2025, he spent time on injured reserve with lingering concussion symptoms, and the Dallas Cowboys would release him before the season ended.
He was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers on December 31, 2025, and he made two appearances in their season finale and Wild Card game. The Packers released him at the end of the season.
What the ESPN article fails to mention is that Diggs played for Dan Quinn in Dallas for a few seasons before Quinn was hired as head coach of the Commanders. As the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, Quinn would have worked closely with Diggs on a pretty consistent basis. Meaning that this might not be totally out of the realm of possibility. The Commanders have plenty of cap space left for 2026 and nothing to lose here.
While Washington has been linked more to Diggs' brother, Stefon, recently, Trevon Diggs could also make sense. It was under Quinn when Diggs had his best NFL season.

Trevon Diggs, CBBest team fit: Washington Commanders
Washington could view Diggs as a reclamation project, helping him get back to being a true playmaker in the secondary. He has had 20 interceptions in six NFL seasons, including a league high of 11 in 2021.
Under new coordinator Daronte Jones, Diggs can use his man coverage traits and backfield vision to get a jump on the ball in the Commanders' pressure-heavy scheme. However, he has plenty of availability concerns after spending at least a portion of the past three seasons on injured reserve.
