From what many of you are saying, it seems that many of you want to move Colvin to a defensive end if we sign him. My question is why? I've always lived by the notion that if it isn't broke, don't fix it and this makes me wonder why sign a very good linebacker who can play DE in nickel situations, and try and turn him into and every down defensive end. Especially when we are weak at strong side linebacker. I firmly believe that Colvin is a player who we can move around according to the situation, but he is foremost a linebacker.

As far as our d-line goes, we really aren't that far off.
-We need a left defensive end: No solution yet, but if we draft Suggs or sign Holliday / Okeafer it is a start.
-We need a right defensive end: Either VandenBosch or D. Johnson will fill this spot, with my money on Johnson.
-We need a run stopping defensive tackle: Tanner, Bell or Dwyer should do, at least I'm dreaming they will. This is a concern.
-We need a pass rushing defensive tackle: That's what we drafted Wendell Bryant for, we have to believe that it is what he will do.

Depth is very abundant on our team up front and so I really believe that we are one pass rusher away, with our athletes (Bryant and Johnson) ready to step up. Also, if we can sign Colvin we have another guy we can move down.

Finally, about the draft. The closer and closer it gets, the more I believe that we need to move up to the TExan's spot. Yes, if we stay put we can save money and get whomever falls to us. But in my opinion we can't keep waiting for things to happen and need to start making them happen. I would rather trade up and choose who I want to take, than wait at the sixth spot and see who falls.

Oh yeah, if we want to become a ball control team with a dominant defense, sign Colvin and then trade up and take Suggs (Yes I changed my mind a little about whom we should draft, though I still would love Charles Rogers). This would allow us to have a pass rushing defensive end and inpact player at both defensive end and linebacker in normal situations, PLUS both at the ends in nickle situations. Versatility is the key my friends.

If we get Colvin, and Holliday/Okeafor, I think we will draft a Wr. Assuming we sign a FA QB. KVB and Johnson could be starters next year, or they could be backups. Lots of possibilities for Graves to think about. Colvin and Suggs at the DE position would be great. The current DT's have potential but its still up in the air to me.

I would not want to pass up an impact player like Suggs, Leftwich or Newman just so we can replace Boston - unless Johnson is miles better than McAddley or Gilmore. (I'd rather wait til Round 2 or 3 and then draft Burleson or Calico).

Regarding our defensive scheme- Unless we get Colvin or Okeafor, why waste our time worrying about this?

I actually think that Colvin should be a DE if we signed him. Its not exactly a new position for him as he played it in college and moved around alot and played it with the Bears as well. Then our starting DL would be:

RDE Colvin, DJohnson
DT Tanner, Bell
DT Bryant, Wakefield (this of course is a project and he would have to bulk up)
LDE KVB, Redding (hehe, if he falls to us in the 2nd and we draft him that is)

On definate passing downs DJ can move over to KVB spot, and we can bring Thompson from the LB spot. This I think we would have a tremendous upgrade to our pass rush.

I think the only position we should be targeting with our number one is QB and more specifically Leftwich.

hookem horns...ahh....I forgot that it was rumored last season that long term wakefield may be a tackle...I have been curious why we have only brought in one d tackle when we really only have bell, tanner and bryant.. we obviously need defensive ends - but we have been pretty active bringing them in during free agency.. Maybe it is true that wakefield would bulk up and move down.. I always thought he was too tall to play tackle..but maybe they see something else..
