Midfielder Andres Herrera has signed an official contract with the Crew after spending the last two seasons with Columbus on loan from Argentina's River Plate.

The Crew announced the deal on July 1, a day after his second loan expired. Rather than using the loan-to-purchase option from River Plate, the two clubs agreed to a separate deal for an undisclosed transfer fee.

"Andres has been a great fit for our club’s desired style of play and culture, and we are delighted that he will continue his career in Columbus,” Crew general manager Issa Tall said in a statement. "Since he arrived in Columbus, he's displayed his positive attitude, competitiveness and strong work ethic every day."

Before Herrera's loan expired, the 27-year-old expressed a desire to remain in Columbus.

"Ultimately, my family is here," Herrera said through a translator. "I would love to stay here."

Herrera will be available when the Crew return from the World Cup break against New York City FC on July 22, pending approval of his visa.
