The Buffaloes are back on the dance floor.
The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team was picked as an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, earning its fourth appearance in five years. The 10-seed Buffaloes will face off against the seventh-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini in the first round of the Big Dance on Saturday. Colorado will tip off against the Illini at 7:30 p.m. MT on ESPN2.
The Buffaloes are back in March Madness a year after being the First Team Out, following back-to-back Sweet Sixteen runs in the two previous tournaments. Overall, it is the program's 17th appearance.
The selection comes after a semifinal run in the Big 12 Tournament, where the Buffaloes captured two wins. After a first-round bye, the Buffaloes beat Kansas and locked in their March Madness chances in the quarterfinals. Colorado took down the No. 20-ranked Baylor Bears before taking a close loss to the eventual champion in West Virginia.
Colorado is in the first Fort Worth quadrant, where the No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores are hosting the first two rounds in Nashville, Tennessee. With a first-round win, the Buffaloes would face the winner of Vanderbilt versus No. 15 High Point, with a trip to the second weekend on the line.
But first, the Illini await. In a tough Big Ten conference, Illinois finished 10th with a 9-9 record. The Illini shoot 36.1% from the 3-point line, the fifth-best in the conference, while scoring 77.5 points per game.
