Colorado football spring practice is in full swing, and with that comes plenty of offseason hype and buzz surrounding new transfer portal additions to the roster. One of the more intriguing and, quite honestly, underrated groups that has not gotten nearly enough attention is the EDGE position for the Buffaloes.
Last season, Colorado totaled just 13 sacks, a significant drop from 2024, when they registered a whopping 39 sacks and led the Big 12. Head coach Deion Sanders and his staff recognized that generating a serious pass rush would be an absolute necessity heading into the upcoming season, and they attacked the transfer portal with that mission in mind.
Colorado defensive run game coordinator and defensive Ends coach George Helow spoke to the media about the philosophy driving their offseason approach. Production was the priority, and they went out and found players they believe can translate their game to the Power Four level.
"The main focus was on production," Helow said. "A lot of these guys that transferred in were high-production guys. High performers and high achievers at the schools they were at. That's what we were looking for."
The Buffaloes added San Jose State's Vili Taufatofua, who recorded 34 total tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles a season ago. They also brought in North Dakota State's Toby Anene, who posted 27 total tackles and seven sacks, along with Albany's Balansama Kamara, who racked up 57 total tackles and 6.5 sacks for the Great Danes. All three come from smaller programs, but Helow and Sanders have clearly believed in their ability to make an impact in Boulder.
When asked about the state of the EDGE room and what he has been seeing this spring, Helow was straightforward.
"Really pleased with the things that I'm seeing right now," Helow said. "Our recruiting staff did a really good job at getting guys in here that are good character guys that love football, that want to be great, that want to be coached."
All three transfers are the group's leaders right now. It is a fascinating position to watch for this Buffs defense, and the hope is that the production more closely resembles 2024 than it did 2025.
