Colorado basketball was dealt a major blow on Friday afternoon when star freshman Isaiah Johnson announced he was entering the transfer portal. However, that news became somewhat manageable when it was announced Saturday that guard Barrington Hargress agreed to a deal to return to the Buffaloes.

The 6-foot-1 junior was a huge bright spot for the Buffs in his first year in Boulder. His 14.2 points and 4.5 assists were enough to earn him co-team MVP honors alongside Johnson. Hargress immediately becomes the de facto starting point guard and first key piece of the puzzle for Tad Boyle's squad.

Perhaps Hargress won't return to Colorado if the newly hired athletic director, Fernando Lovo, does not prioritize keeping most of the young roster intact.

"Colorado has increased its investment in the roster under AD Fernando Lovo, with CU Athletics set to double its commitment to men's basketball next season," Joe Tipton of On3 reported.

So excited to have Barrington back next season! The most efficient guard in the @Big12Conference — 53.1% from the field and a 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio that led the entire conference.

Can’t wait to see what he does next‼️#GoBuffs https://t.co/KoR8g5z1xm

It was going to be nearly impossible for Lovo and CU to keep every young player. While losing Johnson was not a great start, keeping Hargress is a major win for a program that has struggled mightily since re-entering the Big 12.

More investment in the men's basketball program is a huge change in direction for a department that has seemingly let basketball fall by the wayside to build up its football program.

Lovo is bringing a different mindset toward basketball, and it should excite Buff Nation.
