The Indiana State softball team has announced the signings of Mikka Spence and Kailee O’Sullivan.
Spence joins ISU from Gibbons, Alberta, Canada, after transferring by way of Galveston College. The right-handed pitcher played in two games at Galveston in the 2026 season, posting a 2.28 earned-run average and earning a spot on the Academics President's List.
Before her time at Galveston, Spence played at Sturgeon Composite High School and for the Team Alberta and Kaizen travel teams. Throughout her high school career, she recorded a .458 batting average, .538 on-base percentage and a 1.78 ERA. She also received the Merit's Award and the Sportsmanship Awards while competing on the volleyball and flag-football teams. She plans to major in biology at Indiana State.
O'Sullivan joins ISU from Plainfield, Ill., after playing two years at Fairleigh Dickinson. During her time at FDU, she posted a .335 batting average with a team-leading 24 doubles, three triples and four home runs along with 64 RBIs and 45 runs scored.
This past season, she recorded a .307 batting average over 45 games played, including 11 doubles and two home runs. She sat second on the FDU roster with 28 RBIs. During her freshman season, O'Sullivan earned All-NEC Second Team and All-Rookie honors after recording a .356 batting average and a team-high .527 slugging percentage highlighted by 13 doubles, three triples and two homers to go with 36 RBIs.
She was a decorated high school player as she earned All-State and All-Conference recognition at Providence Catholic High School. She also earned GCAC Red Conference Player of the Year honors.
She was ranked the No. 39 player as a utility player for the class of 2024 by Extra Innings Softball and made the 2024 PGF All-American Games Watch List. She plans to major in applied medicine/nursing at ISU.
College basketball
• Carey joins Gardner-Webb staff — Former ISU men's assistant coach Brett Carey has landed with Gardner-Webb as their newest associate head coach. Last season, he was an assistant at Charlotte, where ISU happened to travel to and lost 92-76 on Nov. 3, 2025.
Carey spent four seasons with the Sycamores under then-head coach Greg Lansing from 2017-21. In 2020-21, the Sycamores led the Missouri Valley Conference in turnover margin and advanced to the league tournament semifinals.
Tyreke Key earned first-team All-MVC honors while Jake LaRavia and Tre Williams also earned postseason recognition. During the 2019-20 season, ISU went 18-12 and 11-7 in MVC play, with Key and Jordan Barnes receiving all-conference and all-district honors.
