The Iowa Hawkeyes closed out a tumultuous 2024-25 campaign at 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten), missing the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year and finishing 15th in conference play.

As fans grappled with the end of the Fran McCaffery era, another wave of roster upheaval crashed through Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Sophomore forward Seydou Traore has committed to Utah through the transfer portal.

With McCaffery out, incoming coach Ben McCollum must assemble almost an entirely new roster, highlighted by Drake transfer guard Kael Combs.

Traore's agency, WEAVE, told On3Sports reporter Joe Tipton of his decision to transfer, which he announced via X on Saturday.

Traore’s decision lands amid one of the most active spring windows in Iowa program history.

He becomes the newest Hawkeye to depart since the portal opened, joining Brock Harding (TCU), Riley Mulvey (Siena) and Owen Freeman (Creighton) among others.

A 6-foot-7 wing who averaged 5.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 27 games (12 starts), Traore showed promise in his lone season at Iowa.

His departure cements the Hawkeyes’ status as one of the nation’s biggest offseason overhauls.

Now, he heads to Salt Lake City to help Alex Jensen reboot the Utah frontcourt.

The Utes limped to a 16-17 mark (8-12 Big 12) in their first season after leaving the Pac-12, firing Craig Smith in late February and turning to assistant Josh Eilert on interim duty.

Utah’s offense ranked just 131st nationally at 75.5 points per game.

For both programs, Saturday’s portal news may prove the turning point of their 2025-26 narratives.
