Sunshine State, or Peach State?
That's the decision awaiting Bishop Snyder senior pitcher Cole Dennis after the Atlanta Braves selected him in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on July 11 in Philadelphia.
The Braves picked Dennis in the fourth round at No. 112 overall, which carries a value of $697,700 in the league's draft slot structure.
Dennis has the choice of signing with the Braves or continuing on to college baseball at Jacksonville University, where he signed in November 2025.
The 17-year-old right-hander is coming off an excellent senior year with Bishop Snyder, going 10-1 on the mound with a 2.01 ERA, 101 strikeouts and a 0.926 WHIP. At the plate, he also batted .432 with seven doubles, 12 home runs, 31 RBI and a 1.552 OPS for the Florida High School Athletic Association Region 1-2A finalists.
Dennis was among three Jacksonville high schoolers invited to the MLB Draft Combine, and was rated in the top 120 of draft-eligible prospects by ESPN. He becomes the most recent early draftee from the Jacksonville area, after six locals went in the first 80 picks of the 2025 draft.
Also selected from the region was Glynn Academy outfielder Wessley Roberson, to the Miami Marlins at No. 115 overall.
Three players from Florida high schools were chosen in the first round: Gulliver Prep shortstop Jacob Lombard to the Miami Marlins at No. 14, Parkland Douglas pitcher Gio Rojas to the Texas Rangers at No. 16, South Walton pitcher Coleman Borthwick to the San Diego Padres at No. 21. UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky went No. 1 overall to the Chicago White Sox.
