So, I left watching the game Sunday thinking that Andre Ellington had left some yards on the field. More than that, I thought that complaints about the guard play were more about people wanting to see Jonathan Cooper than they were about the guards themselves.

So I looked at what Ellington had at the mesh point of every rushing attempt from Sunday to see where the faults were--whether Ellington was playing less than 100% or whether these guards are disasters or something else.

It appears the poor performance is the result of the line and TE's poor blocking than Elli having a bad day. I think he is in way more pain than folks care to admit and one has to wonder if he is damaging his long term career to help save this season.

Not counting the last run, my count is 5 successful runs, 5 unsuccessful runs with Ellington being at fault, and 5 unsuccessful runs with TEs or OL at fault.

It just takes a lot for a running play to be successful. I didn't walk away from that review thinking that the interior OL is a huge problem outside of that one play where Aaron Donald just dropped a neutron bomb on Larsen and Sendlein.

just from my personal eyeball test...it appears to me that Juke is losing yardage because he is avoiding the extreme cuts that it would take to avoid contact and keep the play alive.

+1

I think the pain and the inability to make those cuts naturally is having an impact. The loss of practice time as well seems to be impacting his timing and footwork based on what you've shown. Hope Kulabafi can go this week, I have no desire to see Grice get anything but 2-3 hand-offs and sprint to the edge.

Having a wide receiver blocking inside the tackle box is either a really poorly designed play or the quarterback audibling to a play with the wrong personnel package on the field.

Good stuff K9.

I agree the lack of practice isn't helping.

It appears also that as the line screws up early and becomes the fault, Ellington eventually is at fault because of the crap that transpired earlier and he basically goes into screw it mode which is natural for anyone who has been lead not to depend on those around him. Lastly, unless you are the coach, you still cannot say for sure who truly screwed up because you did not design the play regardless of how basic the outcome appears but regardless of that percentage I think you are pretty close K9... keep these evaluations up man!

It just takes a lot for a running play to be successful. I didn't walk away from that review thinking that the interior OL is a huge problem outside of that one play where Aaron Donald just dropped a neutron bomb on Larsen and Sendlein.

That's surprising. They were showing that play last night on one of the NFL Network shows. Giving the impression that Donald was abusing Sendlein and Larsen all game. That's what I assumed.

It's also surprising how many successful plays there were. You hear what Juke rushed for, just over a yard per carry. So it doesn't add up. Then you remember how many negative plays there were and it makes sense. It seemed like every run was either a small gain or a loss of 3 yards. Lots of 2nd and 13 - and 3rd and 13.
