Mike Krzyzewski was live on air when the news broke that UNC had hired Mike Malone as its new head men’s basketball coach, and his reaction should have Tar Heels’ fans worried.
Malone, who has coached in the NBA since 2001, including as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets from 2015-25, hasn’t been at the collegiate level since serving as an assistant at Manhattan from 1999-2001. And while he did help bring the Nuggets the NBA championship in 2023, Krzyzewski was quick to point out that UNC had brought in another former pro champ as a coach just this past season.
“Well, they had an NFL champion hired as the coach, and Duke beat Carolina in football this year,” Coach K said of Bill Belichick.
The move is seen as a risk considering Malone’s unfamiliarity with the college game, and his name certainly was not near the top of a list that included Billy Donovan, Nate Oats, Dusty May and Tommy Lloyd.
