As the United States Men's National Team prepares for a pivotal group-stage matchup against Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, former USMNT legend Clint Dempsey offered some great advice to the current team. It wasn't about tactics, formations, or anything related to the ever-growing expectations surrounding the team, but instead, he pointed to one specific trait: confidence.
Reflecting on his own iconic career, Dempsey urged the young American roster to embrace total self-belief on the world stage during an interview with Men in Blazers.
“Confidence. To believe in yourself, to try things," Dempsey said. "To play the game how you love it, figure it out for yourself. Those are the things that helped me the most."
Along with the extreme importance of confidence, Dempsey would surely also offer some advice from his parents.
"If you don't shoot, you don't score," Dempsey revealed his parents told him.
Dempsey certainly knew a thing or two about taking shots, as he's tied with former teammate Landon Donovan for the most goals as a member of the USMNT with 57. He made 141 appearances for the United States Men's National Team.
All of the advice above appears to be something the United States is running with currently, as they certainly didn't lack confidence in their World Cup opener against Paraguay. And in terms of taking shots, the USMNT's impressive 4-1 result proves they had no issue taking chances at goal.
