When it comes to the men's World Cup, Mexico has, quite literally, never looked better than it has during the last couple of weeks. After a dominant 3-0 win over Czechia on Wednesday, Mexico swept the group stage (meaning, it earned all nine available points) for the first time in the history of the country's men's soccer program. Even better, Mexico has yet to concede a goal with a resounding 6-0 goal differential, as a raucous Round of 32 matchup in Mexico City's Stadio Azteca awaits next Tuesday. Mexico remains undefeated at the stadium in all nine World Cup games it's ever played there.

Truly, El Tri's World Cup performance thus far has the team and its fans rightfully dreaming big about what's possible in this tournament. It's even earned the admiration of an unlikely fan, Clint Dempsey.

During pregame analysis for the United States Men's National Team's (USMNT) final group stage match with Türkiye on Thursday, Dempsey made a classy gesture. He took the time to give Mexico its flowers for firing on all cylinders en route to the World Cup's knockout rounds. He even said that he hopes the USMNT stays focused and channels Mexico's third-group-game mentality thus far in this World Cup.

For someone like Dempsey, in particular, to say this is notable:

Dempsey, of course, was a central figure for the USMNT in a heated rivalry with Mexico for many years. That means that anything complimentary from him about Mexico's play should inherently carry more weight than an analysis from someone who wasn't part of one of the world's great soccer rivalries. This isn't to say that Dempsey wouldn't be objective about what he sees. It's more so that he gushed about a team that was a consistent thorn in his country's side during his playing career in a segment about his country. I could be wrong, but not many athletes would do such a thing.

Kudos to Dempsey for his candor and insight about Mexico. You know Mexico is doing something right in this World Cup when a USMNT legend talks it up.
