Abdullah Mason’s homecoming ended in a victory Saturday night as the Cleveland native retained his WBO lightweight title after beating Albert Bell inside the Wolstein Center.

After a slow start for Mason, the 22-year-old began to heat up towards the middle of the match as the Cleveland crowd of over 9,000 started to roar in favor of the hometown kid.

In the 12th and final round, Mason won after a controversial stoppage. The Cleveland boxer exploded out of his corner and knocked Bell down twice before the referee quickly called the fight in favor of Mason.

Following his victory, Mason said he hopes to fight in Cleveland again, with his eyes set on selling out Rocket Arena sometime in the future.

Mason continues his perfect record, walking out of the Wolstein Center with an undefeated 21-0 (18 KOs) record.

Saturday night’s card consisted of the first officially recognized world boxing title fights to take place in Cleveland since 2006. Twenty years ago, Belarusian Siarhei Liakhovich defeated Lamon Brewster to win the WBO heavyweight belt by unanimous decision at the Wolstein Center.

Mason was originally supposed to defend against Joe Cordina instead of Bell Saturday; however, visa issues forced Cordina to withdraw.
