Ian Schieffelin isn’t done chasing a basketball career after all.
One year after putting professional hoops on hold to join Clemson’s football team, the former Tigers standout is headed to the NBA Summer League. His representatives announced Monday that Schieffelin will suit up for the Miami Heat, giving him an opportunity to compete in front of NBA coaches and executives this summer.
The move brings Schieffelin back to the sport where he built his reputation at Clemson. During four seasons with the Tigers, he developed into one of the ACC’s most reliable forwards and finished his career as one of the program’s top rebounders. His final season was his best, as he averaged 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists while helping Clemson win 27 games and earning second-team All-ACC recognition.
By the time his basketball career in orange ended, Schieffelin had accumulated more than 1,000 career points and nearly 900 rebounds. He played in 134 games, started 99 of them and climbed to seventh on Clemson’s all-time rebounding list. He also left with the most career assists by any Tiger measuring at least 6-foot-8.
Instead of entering the professional ranks immediately, Schieffelin made one of the more unique decisions in college athletics by joining Dabo Swinney’s football roster as a tight end. Although he was new to the sport, he earned playing time in eight games and finished the season with two catches for 10 yards.
Now his attention returns fully to basketball.
Miami begins its Summer League schedule July 3 against the San Antonio Spurs in San Francisco before traveling to Las Vegas for the remainder of the event. The Heat’s July 11 meeting with the Orlando Magic is currently slated to be televised on Prime, giving Schieffelin another chance to show he belongs at the next level.
