3. Terrell Suggs, defensive end, Arizona State: His stats are messed up. He lapped every defensive end who played college football by having 24 sacks last season. Yet he can't do better than two 4.8s and one 4.9 40 after three months of training. Then, to make matters worse, he attends a three-on-three basketball game for a relative and doesn't have the speed to avoid being hit in the back by a big piece of road debris. The off-the-field incident doesn't affect his ratings, but the lack of foot speed will. How does anyone have the football speed to get 24 sacks and can't show better times in the 40? The poor 40 time may have cost him a chance to go in the top five, but will it make teams question taking a 257-pound end with average speed in the top 10? Maybe.

This is exactly why so many teams draft busts every year. They fall in love with "stats" and completely disregard "production".

If a guy has 24 sacks and runs a 4.8, he must suck.

If a guy has 1 sack but is 6-4/280, runs a 4.5, and benches 225 - 40 times, hell...that guy is a stud. He has "potential".

It is amazing to me how much money is spent scouting, reviewing tape, interviews, combines, All-Star games, etc....and yet there are so many misses in the top 10 every year.

Lets just forget about playing the game, and line everyone up and see who passes the eyeball test and runs the fastest 40...then sign them to a contract!

Well a 4.8 40 for a potential top 5 draft pick DE is somewhat of a Red Flag.

His college sack stats may not translate at that speed in the NFL. May notch him down from star to just good. Good isn't a top five pick.

Mostly it's just weird that he could be that slow and still get that many sacks.

Yeah but the same can be said for players who were Studs in college yet couldn't handle the leap into the NFL.

Drafting a player in the NFL is far from a science. There are no garentees. All you can do is take Everything you know about a player (College Performance, Experience, Workout Numbers, etc.) and try to project how he will fare in the NFL. It's not an easy thing to do.

TWo words, Thomas Burke. Had all the right production but not the right measurables.

It's a crapshoot I think Suggs is probably for real and I think the 40 time is a godsend for the Cards if he slips, but he could very well be a bust and 2 years from now we'll all be lamenting picking a guy who ran that slow in the 40.

Suggs

He should be used as a linebacker. Remember Fulcher who played for Cincy in the late 80's. He was a Linebacker who was change to a safety.
