The Atlanta Hawks have secured one of their most important veterans for another season, agreeing to a one-year, $21 million contract extension with guard CJ McCollum, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal, negotiated by agent Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management, also includes a trade kicker and keeps McCollum from reaching free agency this summer.
McCollum quickly became a valuable piece of Atlanta’s roster after arriving during the season. His leadership, scoring ability, and playoff experience helped stabilize a young Hawks team that surged down the stretch. Atlanta won 18 of its final 20 games during a remarkable late-season run that propelled the franchise into the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The 13-year NBA veteran averaged 18.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 35.7% from three-point range in 41 appearances for Atlanta. His offensive consistency provided a strong complement to franchise cornerstone Jalen Johnson and gave the Hawks another dependable perimeter scorer in crucial moments.
McCollum extended one of the league’s most impressive shooting streaks by making at least 150 three-pointers for the 11th consecutive season. He remains the only NBA player to accomplish that feat every year since the 2015-16 campaign, highlighting his durability and elite shooting ability.
Hawks reward McCollum
For Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh , the extension represents a commitment to continuity as Atlanta looks to build on last season’s success. While the franchise continues to evaluate ways to improve its roster, retaining McCollum ensures the team maintains a proven veteran presence alongside its emerging core.
As the Hawks prepare for the 2026-27 season, McCollum’s extension provides stability and reinforces Atlanta’s belief that it can remain a contender in the Eastern Conference. His combination of shooting, leadership, and postseason experience makes him a critical piece of the organization’s future plans.
