Former two-division champion Alex Pereira entered Sunday's UFC Freedom 250 co-main event interim heavyweight title bout chasing history at the historic event. With a win, Pereira would become the first fighter in the promotion's history to win championships in three different weight classes.
Standing in his way was former interim titleholder and multiple-time title challenger Ciryl Gane. Gane fought for the undisputed championship last October against champion Tom Aspinall. The fight was ruled a no contest after a double eye poke rendered Aspinall unable to continue. With Aspinall still recovering, the fight promotion opted to crown an interim champion.
Despite weighing in heavier, Pereira was the smaller fighter inside the octagon. They touched gloves and Gane landed a jab. Pereira threw a head kick that was blocked in response. They traded leg kicks. Pereira again went high with a kick that was blocked again. Gane stepped forward with his jab. Pereira delivered a calf kick. Gane responded with an inside leg kick. Gane's jab began finding a regular home.
Midway thought the frame, Gane casually looked for a takedown. Pereira shrugged it off. Gane connected with a right hand. He picked up the pace. His jab continued to land. Pereira pressed forward. Gane connected with a left hand. Pereira reacted with a leg kick. Gane looked for a takedown but didn't commit. Pereira connected with two right hands near the bell. Gane connected with a combination while Pereira was badly hurt and on wobby legs. Referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop it.
