The Cincinnati Reds announced an Emilio Pagan roster move on Thursday. Pagan, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, was sent on a rehab assignment on Thursday, the team announced.

The 35-year-old closer pitched well during the 2025 season, turning in a 2.88 ERA and 32 saves across 70 total appearances. Pagan established himself as one of the better closers in the game, and the Reds were excited to see what he could do this season.

However, the right-handed hurler has recorded an underwhelming 6.43 ERA in his 15 appearances to go along with six saves. He has been limited by the injury as well. The season has not gone according to plan for Pagan, but the fact that he is going on a rehab assignment suggests he may return soon.

The Reds will continue to closely monitor and provide updates on his status. He features the potential to make a significant impact, and the Reds need all of the help they can get at the moment.

Overall, Cincinnati is 37-42 this year. The ball club is 12.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central standings. Although the division will obviously be difficult to win, Cincinnati could still make a push in the National League Wild Card standings.

The NL is deep, though. Making a postseason push is going to be difficult for this Reds ball club. It is not out of the question, however.

What's Next for the Reds?

The Reds recently had an opportunity to make a statement against the Brewers. They were playing the NL Central leaders at home. However, Cincinnati was unable to get the job done. The Reds were swept by Milwaukee in what was a disappointing series.

The Reds will have an opportunity to bounce back this weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 41-40 Pirates have endured ups and downs, but they will present a challenge for the Reds. Pittsburgh is currently in fourth place in the NL Central standings.

It should be a competitive series. The Reds need to find a way to begin winning on a consistent basis. Otherwise, they may end up selling at the trade deadline. Emilio Pagan's injury return -- whenever it does happen -- will certainly help the ball club.

First pitch for the first contest of the series between the Reds and Pirates on Friday night is scheduled for 6:40 PM EDT.
