When it comes to the biggest games, teams expect their best player to step up. That's what made U.S. men's national team star Christian Pulisic's showing so disappointing on Monday night.

His postgame comments didn't help either.

Before Pulisic took himself out of the match due to injury, he was already having his worst performance in the World Cup. He gave the ball away more than any USMNT player, looked timid and avoided taking on defenders in situations that called for it.

Mind you that Pulisic controversially skipped the Gold Cup in order to rest and be fit for his club season with AC Milan and this World Cup. So, what did Pulisic bring up after this crushing defeat on home soil?

Rest ... once again.

Pulisic said to Fox Sports' Jenny Taft:

"I just twisted my ankle or just sprained my ankle. It's just frustrating to end like that, of course. But now I get time to rest, so it'll be OK."

Understandably, USMNT fans did not love how Pulisic defaulted to mentioning rest after that showing.

How social media reacted

“Now I’ll have time to rest so it’ll be okay”

Charmin Ultra Soft. Loser mentality. I’m not sure Pulisic was ever meant to be the face of the nation. pic.twitter.com/zxIYPdseYu

The nonchalant gimmick NEEDS TO END!

I get to rest now?! BE SO FR! pic.twitter.com/qOnYNLl9dl

“Now I get time to rest, so it’ll be okay.”

Is that really how we’re looking at this?
Can’t believe this is real. pic.twitter.com/LqxldLiOGL

Guy skipped things before the World Cup to rest, rested during the group stage, and is now talking about rest the second they lost..

We wanted Christian Pulisic to be the face of U.S. soccer but all he wants to be is my 13 year old German Shepherd. https://t.co/Nk2pDNhiPu

Can’t believe this is our “leader” no wonder we got embarrassed

Go ahead and rest right on through 2030 Pulisic… the U.S. doesn’t need you or this attitude tbh. https://t.co/L1lCIsvk3G

Not sure what happened to Pulisic this cycle. Went from celebrating a made up CONCACAF tournament like it was the Champions League Final to skipping Good Cups and "time to rest now" after an embarrassing loss in the World Cup. https://t.co/K65qPNhMnq

Don't worry about it lil bro, this was just another tournament, no big deal. https://t.co/yS9tlyx3ke

"time to rest" ... for WHAT exactly? the team is out of the tournament. You'd never hear a QB say this after their team lost in the playoffs. And I don't want to hear anything about club season or whatever, this is the WORLD CUP. Disappointing to say the least. https://t.co/359Q2CJiBl
