Christian Eriksen update comes after scary collapse for Denmark, reminiscent of past injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Christian Eriksen collapsed to the pitch on Sunday as Denmark played Ukraine in a friendly.
The 34-year old midfielder appeared to hold his chest before going down to the ground.
The Danish Football Association released the following statement":
"Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off."
Eriksen went down in the 65th minute.
It brought to mind Eriksen's injury history -- he collapsed mid-game for Denmark during the European Championship in 2021. That time, he needed emergency treatment on the pitch after suffering cardiac arrest.
"Medical specialists subsequently took the decision to fit a heart starter to Eriksen after undergoing different heart examinations, which allowed him to continue playing sport after a period of recovery," The Athletic wrote on Sunday.
Eriksen is a Danish football legend who recently wrapped up his first season with Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga.
Denmark didn't qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They made it to the playoff stage, but they lost on penalties to Czechia and thus will miss the tourney.
It's too early to make any judgments on Eriksen's footballing future.
It's good news that he's conscious and "doing well under the circumstance," but there will surely be more news to come as time goes along.
It was a scary moment for Denmark and for all involved on Sunday, to be sure.
