Standout midfielder Christian Eriksen is expected to be discharged from the hospital "soon" after collapsing on the pitch during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine on Sunday.
"I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well," said Danish team doctor Morten Boesen in a statement posted to social media by the country's soccer federation. "He is with family and in good spirits.
"The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home."
Eriksen, 34, grabbed his chest while playing defense and fell to the ground during the June 7 match, prompting players on both teams to immediately call for the athletic training staff. Boesen said Sunday that Eriksen was "briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly."
After roughly 10 minutes, he was able to get up and walk to an ambulance under his own power. The rest of the match was canceled.
The incident wasn't the first heart-related scare Eriksen has endured during a game.
In 2021, he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during the first half of Denmark's Euro match against Finland. However, his life was saved when teammate Simon Kjær rushed to put Eriksen on his side and make sure his airway was open before paramedics revived him with a defibrillator.
A pacemaker was implanted in Eriksen's heart in the following days, which was likely activated when he collapsed on Sunday.
"He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident," Boesen said in Sunday's statement.
Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for this summer's World Cup.
