The Tennessee Titans will induct Chris Johnson into their ring of honor after the former running back announced he’s been diagnosed with ALS.
Three weeks after Johnson, 40, revealed his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no cure, the Titans announced their plan to induct him into the ring of honor.
In a statement on Friday, July 17, Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said, “Chris Johnson holds a special place in the hearts of our organization and our fans. His stats speak for themselves, and he will forever remain a leader in our record books, but the man behind the yardage deserves just as much celebration. We look forward to welcoming him home on Sept. 13 and officially inducting him into the Titans Ring of Honor.”
The Titans will host the New York Jets for their season opener at Nissan Stadium in Nashville during that game.
Johnson played with the Titans from 2008 through 2013 and was named to three Pro Bowls during his years in Tennessee. Last month, he revealed that he was diagnosed with the disease in 2025. In a pre-taped interview on GMA, Johnson told Michael Strahan, “I want people to know that I’m still me. ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am.”
Also on Friday, the Titans released a compilation video of current and former NFL stars doing the popular 2014 ice bucket challenge after Johnson called for its return. Aaron Donald, Taylor Lewan and Maxx Crosby were among some of the players who participated in Johnson’s honor.

In the last year, Johnson’s condition has rapidly progressed, leaving him to rely on a speech-generating device that he controls with his eyes for communication. The device is customized to sound like Johnson because doctors recorded his voice before the former football player lost his ability to speak.
“It’s continued to progress much faster than I ever imagined,” he said. “I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body. Just over a year ago I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter so she could make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn’t do that.”
Hours after Johnson announced his diagnosis in an interview on GMA, Strunk and the Titans quickly spoke out to offer their support. “Some people leave a mark on an organization that you just can’t put into words. Chris Johnson is one of those people for us,” Strunk said in a statement.
She continued, “His leadership on the field, in addition to his impact in the locker room and Nashville community have written him permanently into the story of this franchise. Learning this news is extremely difficult, and we will support Chris every step of the way throughout his journey. We are holding him and his family close, and join our fans around the world in expressing our love for Chris.”
