Michigan State basketball did battle with Ole Miss on Friday night in the Sweet 16 in what turned out to be a hard fought, physical battle between the Spartans and Rebels. In the end, Michigan State snuck past Ole Miss, punching their ticket into the Elite 8 on Sunday.

With the win, Michigan State will now move on to face top overall seed Auburn in the Elite Eight on Sunday. Tipoff on Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET and will be televised on CBS.

For Ole Miss, this puts an end to the season, the second season during Chris Beard's tenure. The Rebels had a successful season, making their second ever Sweet 16 appearance, but ultimately it ended in disappointment.

Following the loss, Chris Beard took the podium with two of his players, Jaemyn Brakefield and Matthew Murrell, and talked about the game and the team as a whole.

Notes:

  • Beard gave his opening statement, talking about how physical the game was between two tough teams. He also gave his kudos to Tom Izzo and the Spartan team
  • Brakefield talked about staying through a coaching change at Ole Miss and how rewarding this year has been
  • Brakefield and Murrell talked about the game, and some of the things that went wrong, allowing Michigan State to come back
  • Beard maintained that this was a team effort, and the time to talk about individual players will come later, but this is all about his teams performance
  • Beard continued to talk about how this team raised expectations for the program and laid the groundwork for future years
