Chivas defeated Atlas by a 2-1 score to get another victory in the Clasico Tapatio and return to their winning ways after two straight losses. Chivas overcame an early goal to get a deserved victory over their city rivals, making them victorious in their both clasicos, after early defeating America in the Superclasico. Chivas will return to action with a midweek clash against Club Leon while Atlas will have a tough away match next Saturday when they face off against Toluca.

The 1st half started with the surprise of Chivas coming out with both Armando Gonzalez and Angel Sepulveda up top. Diego Gonzalez got off a left footed shot that went well wide. In ensuing free kick, Chivas’ goalkeeper Raul Rangel made a terrible back pass right to Atlas’ Paulo Ramirez, who would get off a left footed shot that went past Rangel and into the net to score and give Atlas the 1-0 lead. It was a terrible mistake from Rangel as Atlas had started more intense and it paid off. Alfonso Gonzalez got off a left footed shot from outside the area that was easily handled by Rangel. A right footed shot from outside the area from Gustavo Ferrareis would force a good save from Rangel. A cross into the area was cleared by a header before Bryan Alonso Gonzalez could get a close range header. After a good combination play, Omar Govea got off a right footed shot from outside the area that Atlas’ goalkeeper, Camilo Vargas, would save. Chivas started to counter well and had a couple of dangerous runs that didn’t end up with shots on goal. After a good counter, a great pass to Ramirez was wasted when he didn’t get off a shot with his right foot and instead waited for it to get to his left foot, giving time to Chivas’ defense to clear the ball before he could get off a shot. A free kick into the area turned dangerous when Rangel failed to get to the ball but it was just out of reach of an Atlas attacker for an open net chance. The first half ended and although Chivas improved, it was Atlas who was the better team and had the lead.

The 2nd half started with no changes from either team. After getting the ball outside the area, Armando Gonzalez got off a right footed shot that was deflected by Manuel Capasso past Vargas and into the net to score and tie the match at 1-1. Off a corner kick, the cross was deflected into a wide open Jose Castillo, who incredibly sent his shot wide when it was easier to score than to miss. It was a terrible wasted chance but Chivas now looked the better team on the field. A cross into the area was headed wide by the defense although Daniel Aguirre claimed he was fouled in the area by Jorge Rodriguez. After going to VAR, the ref gave Chivas a Penalty Kick. Armando Gonzalez stepped up to take the PK but his shot was well saved by Vargas. Atlas subbed out Edgar Zaldivar for Victor Rios. Off a corner kick, the ball would eventually fall to Castillo, whose close range header went wide. Sepulveda would be tripped in the area and another PK was given to Chivas. Angel Sepulveda would get off a right footed shot on the PK that fooled Vargas and went into the net to score and give Chivas the 2-1 lead. Chivas subbed out Richard Ledezma, Armando Gonzalez and Omar Govea for Miguel Gomez, Ricardo Marin and Brian Gutierrez. Atlas subbed out Alfonso Gonzalez and Sergio Hernandez for Augustin Rodriguez and Eduardo Aguirre. Off a free kick, a cross into the area would just be out of reach of two Atlas attackers. Chivas subbed out Angel Sepulveda for Efrain Alvarez. Atlas subbed out Alan Rocha for Luis Gamboa. Chivas subbed out Roberto Alvarado for Yael Padilla. Chivas would go defensive but hold on to get the victory in the Clasico Tapatio and climb back to third place in Liga MX.

After having two consecutive losses, Chivas returned to the victory with a very important win in the Clasico Tapatio. Chivas overcame a bad start and clear defensive mistakes to become the better team and get the deserved victory. Atlas failed to keep up the momentum and failed to take advantage of a great performance from Vargas at goalkeeper. The result not only means that Chivas returns to their winning ways but for second consecutive tournament, they have won both of their Clasicos (Superclasico against Club America and Clasico Tapatio against Atlas). Chivas will now have to play against Leon for their postponed midweek match, after their stadium was booked for an exhibition match between Real Madrid vs Barcelona legends. While Atlas will have a tough match away against current Liga MX champions, Toluca.
