The last day of training camp practice without pads took place on Saturday, with a promising young Kansas City Chiefs player being helped off the field with an injury.
According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tests on Chiefs rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen revealed a shin bruise; nothing was torn or broken. A positive result to what could've been speculated after Allen went down with a lower body injury during special teams drills.
Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub addressed the media following the injury, sharing his thoughts on Allen's efforts with the unit.
"Yeah, (CB Kaiir) Elam was catching the ball; he was a gunner. They were both playing gunner, and Elam was catching it. It was clearly there, and (WR Cyrus) Allen came in," said Toub. "He thought he was catching it, and they collided. I mean, I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill. We'll see how he is."
Allen had been a standout performer in practices before the injury, earning praise from coaches and fans for his progress. Toub explained the reasoning for having rookies participate in special teams drills.
"Well, anytime you have a rookie, everybody's on special teams until they aren't. Until they establish themselves as a starter on offense or defense. And then we have to kind of pull back and maybe take them off in two or three phases," said Toub. "But initially, everybody starts off as a four-phase guy, and that's just the way we do it. It's worked over the years. It's hard not to keep a guy off just because he was drafted high and all of a sudden, to try to pull him back and make him a special teams player later. So, you start off that way, and then you wean them off as special teams guys as you go."
During his last college season, Allen was named Second-team All-Big 12 Conference and led Cincinnati with 51 receptions and 674 receiving yards. He started all 13 games in 2025.
