Will Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Emmett Johnson be a good dynasty fantasy football option to draft in 2026?
Johnson is well-positioned to earn a backup role behind Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III in the Chiefs’ offensive backfield next season. The 22-year-old was a prolific rusher at Nebraska in 2025, where he led the Big Ten in rushing yards with 1,451. His talent has him primed to make the most of the snaps that he’s given in Kansas City’s high-octane offense beginning in 2026.
The biggest uncertainty that will determine Johnson’s value in dynasty leagues will be how long he will play behind Walker before assuming a starting role, either in Kansas City or elsewhere, if he seeks to play for another team down the line. Walker is only 25-years-old, coming off of an outstanding 2025 campaign. The Memphis native appears poised to be one of the best rushers in the NFL for the next five years or more.
That dynamic will limit Johnson in being able to reach his ceiling in the early portion of his career. There are positives working for him, though. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is a brilliant orchestrator who — along with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy — will put Johnson in the best position to succeed next season.
Not only so, but Walker comes from a situation with the Seattle Seahawks last season where he was able to rush for 1,000 yards for the second time in his career, despite being the 1A to Zach Charbonnet’s 1B in the offense. That creates an avenue for the Chiefs to carve out a healthy amount of carries for Johnson as soon as in 2026.
Johnson will be a good player to draft and stash on the bench in dynasty leagues this year. His talent speaks volumes, and his potential to produce out of the gates may serve team managers in advantageous matchups next season.
