Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed the media on Thursday for the first time since returning to the field for phase 3 of OTAs. He shared an update on his knee recovery and participating in drills with teammates.

"It was good to be back on the field and just deal with the guys. I think more than anything, when you're some of those days, you're rehabbing, you're kind of here by yourself, or with a couple of the other guys. You get that juice whenever everyone gets back in the building," said Mahomes, "So it was good to be out there and be able to take part in a little bit of the practice. I wore a brace in college, so I'm on the same knee. So it's not too different from how I felt before, and so now it's just getting adjusted to it. I'm not like running and cutting and doing all that stuff in it yet, so I'll get another adjustment period at some point, but it's good to get these reps now, so I get to kind of speed up that adjustment period."

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL late during the Chiefs' Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He continues to rehab and is reportedly ahead of schedule with his recovery while participating in OTAs.

"I don't want to miss games. As a competitor, as a football player, I want to be there. I know it's still a long ways away – I can't predict the future. And so all I can do is be great today, and then continue to be great tomorrow," said Mahomes, "I've gotten to where I've gotten to because of that mindset. The goal at the end – the very far end – is to be ready and to be able to go out there and play with the guys Week 1 at Arrowhead (Stadium). But I gotta take it day by day."

The three-time Super Bowl MVP finished the 2025 season with 22 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in 14 games before the knee injury. He also rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns.

"Yeah, I mean, I wanted to play, I don't want to miss games as much as possible. I know it's not in my control. It's in God's control at some point. I'm going to give myself a chance by the way I work to be the best I can be," said Mahomes. "I'm in a good spot now compared to where some people thought." But I thought I was going to be here. So, it's just doing what I'm supposed to be doing every single day. And hopefully, that gives me the chance to be out there with the guys whenever we start the season."

There hasn't been any early decision as expected, but Mahomes and the Chiefs are still targeting a Week 1 start against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
