Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters on Thursday to close mandatory minicamp. He discussed what he saw from Patrick Mahomes in OTAs.
"No, we didn't have him (Patrick Mahomes) do the run test today, but he probably could've done it and made it, I'm sure with will, but we'll wait till he gets back here to do it," said Reid, "Anyways, I love what he did this offseason, the way he attacked the rehab. You know, he's on course to take these next few days and get ready for camp."
The Chiefs are optimistic after Mahomes showed his resilience by returning to the field for voluntary workouts. Reid further explained the next steps for Mahomes's recovery.
"Yeah, sure. I would tell you just continue rehab with it up till training camp, so keep working his (Patrick Mahomes) legs and the strength in his legs. Then there's a part that – the healing process has to keep taking place," said Reid, "He gets periodic checks on that too, but he's been working close with (Assistant Athletic Trainer) Julie (Frymyer)on the rehab part of it. Then, he comes out and practices – he does rehab before practice, comes to practice, and then he goes after practice. So, he's staying on top of all that."
Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL late during the Chiefs' Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. There hasn't been any early decision as expected, but Mahomes and the Chiefs are still targeting a Week 1 start against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
