Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed the media on Thursday for the first time since returning to the field for phase 3 of OTAs. He shared his thoughts on working with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy again and rookies getting their first experience with him at OTAs.
"There's a standard that you have to practice with, and you have to play with. He's (Bieniemy) going to hold you to that standard, no matter who you are. From the first guy to the 90th guy right now, he's going to hold you to that standard," said Mahomes, "I think that's something – it's hard to replicate, I think that's the best way to say it. He has brought in a lot of concepts and a lot of things that I've really liked that we've added in now. It's good to have him back in the building and having that energy back."
Bieniemy spent nine years as an assistant coach and coordinator with Kansas City before leaving ahead of the 2023 season. He played a vital role as the Chicago Bears' running backs coach this past season.
"A lot of these guys haven't had an EB. They understand it, and honestly, I think it's been cool. They're really receptive of it. Even though it's hard, there's hard days. They know why we're doing it," said Mahomes, "You can see the guys, and they want to be great, and they want to be better than we were last year. We've had a good start to these OTAs, and we just have to keep pushing through it."
Bieniemy was popular amongst star players during his tenure for his ability to hold everyone accountable for mistakes. He notably made a supportive guest appearance in the Chiefs' locker room during the AFC Championship game matchup with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2023 Super Bowl season.
